Patterns of Political Assassination, Nigeria 2004-2006

Political Assassination has been highlighted as a primary security concern within Nigeria. The unstable nature of Nigeria’s democracy combined with use of armed factions has made assassination a widely used political tool. This pattern was brutally highlighted by the murder of gubernatorial candidate Funso Williams in his Lagos home on the 27 July 2006. Williams’s assailants remain unknown, but many believe his death was ordered by his political rivals, including some arrested as part of the ongoing enquiry. Recognizing the significance of these events, the Nigerian government called for the assistance of Scotland Yard in investigating this crime. Read the rest of this entry »
